Streamline Moderne sprang from the Great Depression. People were strapped for cash and manufacturers struggled to hold onto their market share. Outstanding design appeared to hold the answer: thus industrial design was born. Futuristically aerodynamic consumer items such as toasters, sofas, radios, and automobiles sold like hotcakes, and architects quickly appropriated the new style, Streamline Moderne. This illustrated handbook (80+ photographs, many snapped by the author) recounts the history of Streamline Moderne and its relationship to industrial design; details how to identify Streamline Moderne structures; explains how to conduct an architectural survey; and describes how to successfully nominate a building to the National Historic Register. It includes discussions of the various aspects of the expressed style and links to well-written National Historic Register Nominations to use as models. It also includes a survey of Streamline Moderne houses in National City, California.FROM CHAPTER 1 Celebration of speed (speed of transportation, speed of communication) and the celebration of modern transportation machines the automobile, the passenger train, the ocean liner, the airplane, even the zeppelin informed the new aesthetic, giving the industrial designer the visual vocabulary of speed: the curve, the teardrop, the uninterrupted horizontal line. The exciting new architectural style was suddenly de rigueur for filling stations, auto dealerships, bus depots, motels, and cocktail loungesremember, Prohibition ended in 1933but it was never very popular for residential buildings. Part of the reason is economic history. Suburban expansion boomed during the Roaring Twenties, from the end of WWI up until the beginning of the Great Depression, but beginning with the Wall Street Crash, house construction ground to a halt; it did not pick up again for fifteen years, not until the end of WWII. The Thirties constitute the heyday of Streamline Moderne. Common in consumer items, unfortunately, it rarely appeared in domestic architecture: during the Great Depression, not many people were building their Dream Home. And when they were, it was in a conventional style, such as a Cape Cod cottage or a bungalow (most people tend to be conservative when it comes to the style of their home). Through its references to automobiles, trains, and airplanes, the new style dubbed Streamline Moderne imparted a paradoxical dynamism to intrinsically static architectural objects, houses and commercial buildings, making them seem as though they were rushing headlong to meet the future, rather than gazing longingly over its shoulder at the past. For most new home buyers during the turbulent Great Depression, a style which denoted tradition and stability was preferred to one that denoted rushing headlong into the future. For every ten thousand commercial structures which were built during the heyday of Streamline Moderne, only one or two residential structures were built. Only a few Streamline Moderne houses were ever built, and few of those remain today, nestled in odd pockets. ABOUT THE AUTHORThe author holds degrees in Art Architectural History, Literature, Sociology, and Folklore/Folklife (which included post-graduate training in historic preservation). For 25 years, she taught research writing, visual analysis, literature, architectural history, and interior design history at various art schools and colleges.
